Strengthening Integral Ecology and Sustainability in General Education: Designing the Course Model “The Urban Landscape of UC Campuses”

UC Teaching Development Fund, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC)
2020-2021

Co-researcher with Tatiana Carbonell and Magdalena García

The purpose of the project was to create a course model for undergraduate students across all programs at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC), based on an innovative teaching and learning format structured largely around thematic and interdisciplinary fieldwork.

The course sought to recover the urban memory of each UC campus in Santiago through the emblematic landscape projects that have shaped their location and urban condition —such as the Alameda de las Delicias and Cerro San Cristóbal— or through projects that configured urban ecosystems around, or within, UC campuses, as in the cases of Ñuñoa and San Joaquín.

The project approached landscape not only as green infrastructure, but as a complex entity in which natural systems, civic expectations, design proposals, and sociocultural processes intersect, enabling —or limiting— resilience in the face of climate change and historical-cultural transformation.

As an outcome, the course sought to awaken students’ interest in reflecting on a changing and dynamic environment, as well as on the urban issues that shape their own university context.
