“Another End of the World Is Possible”: Metaphors and Slogans of the Environmental Crisis during the First Two Decades of the 21st Century in Chile

National Research Fund, Chile
2023-2026

Co-researcher with Pablo Chiuminatto (main researcher), and Sofía Rosa

Following the passing of Main researcher Pablo Chiuminatto (1965-2025), the project concluded ahead of schedule.

The project sought to identify, describe, and analyze the metaphors —both textual and visual—present in social and cultural manifestations, in order to contribute to local and global transitions toward a viable common future. Its main contribution was to bring audiovisual and multimodal studies into dialogue with climate change and the Anthropocene, understood as an epochal shift, from an interdisciplinary perspective that included the arts, architecture, and the humanities.

Whether seen as pessimistic by some or realistic by others, this broader configuration also reveals an optimistic and utopian counterpart: forms of constructive imagination understood as ways of seeing, feeling, thinking, and dreaming that create conditions of possibility for slowing, confronting, or even reversing the effects of change.

The project therefore addressed a cultural and social turn in which new sensibilities emerge as forces of resistance and negotiation in the face of crisis. In this context, one of the recognized challenges for knowledge today is to understand what collective imaginaries and their metaphorical expressions reveal in the face of an uncertain future.
