"Another possible end of the world", metaphors and slogans of the environmental crisis during the first two decades of the 21st century in Chile

National Research Funding Competition, Chile
2023-2026

Co-resarch with Pablo Chiuminatto (main researcher) and Sofía Rosa

The research seeks to identify, describe and analyze the metaphors (texts and images) present in social and cultural manifestations, in order to contribute to the local and global transition for a viable common future. The novelty of this proposal is, from an interdisciplinary perspective (arts, architecture and humanities), the integration of audiovisual and multimodal studies to the field of climate change and the Anthropocene as an epochal change.

Pessimistic for some, realistic for others, this general configuration shows, not only for epistemological reasons, but also for ethical and educational ones, the manifestations of an optimistic, utopian counterpart. Conventions of constructive imagination, understood as ways of seeing, feeling, thinking and dreaming, creating conditions of possibility to stop the effects of change and even reverse them.

A cultural and social turn that seeks to confront the commitment of other powerful sensibilities that represent the forces of resistance and negotiation of this crisis. A global trance that, if drastic measures are not taken, is leaning towards a catastrophic version of the future. In conclusion, one of the recognized challenges of knowledge today is to understand what collective imaginaries and their metaphorical expressions enunciate in the face of the uncertainty of the future.
